Who Is Above All?

So many of life’s achievements get ranked based on who is first. Think about the people in your life. I bet you can immediately name who got married, possibly finished a degree or reached the top of their profession first. And our kids aren’t any different. So much of the bickering we hear as parents stems from who gets to be first. 

But Paul levels the playing field for believers — young and old alike. In Colossians 1:17, he reminds us we don’t need to worry or argue about who’s first because JESUS already is. He’s the only one who “is before all things” and holds all things together. Whether we choose to acknowledge Him or not, Jesus is number One. 

And if Jesus is number One, we are not. 

This shift makes all the difference in our perspective as we engage the world around us. Instead of keeping score and trying to push our way to the top, we become less selfish and self-centered. We place others’ needs before our own. And we put Christ in the number-one spot of our lives — the place only He deserves — and then teach our kids to do the same, one decision at a time.
