Who Should I Follow?

According to Cleveland Clinic, 60% of kids between the ages of 8 and 11 have at least one social media account. Whether or not your child is among the 60%, someone they know is. Social media has woven itself into the fabric of our society; and no matter our preference or opinion, we must navigate its effects on our kids.

It all comes down to influence. What or who is forming our kids? Who are they “following” online or in real life? How much time do we spend watching what everyone else is doing and comparing our lives to theirs? Whose approval and “likes” matter most? And what does the Bible have to say about all this?

We must teach our children – and ourselves – to look only to Him for approval. Jesus isn’t an influencer who looks at us as one of His millions of followers. He’s our Creator. When He looks at us He sees His beloved child for whom He stopped at nothing, not even death, to seek and save.

As we talk with our kids about influence, social media and the desire to be liked and accepted, may we help our children look for likes in all the right places and fill our days seeking a heart of wisdom that can only come from Him.
